Washington: U.S. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden dined with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House on Wednesday.
Modi was received by the president and first lady, who posed for photos and were seen chatting before entering the building.
“A time for friends to meet! PM @narendramodi arrives at @WhiteHouse for a private engagement with @POTUS @JoeBiden, @FLOTUS @DrBiden and family. An opportunity for two leaders with a deep friendship to cherish special moments together,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Arindam Bagchi tweeted.
The president, first lady and prime minister also enjoyed a musical tribute to the Indian region tonight, according to the White House.
They were also joined by US national security adviser Jack Sullivan and his Indian counterpart Ajit Doval, it said.
Prime Minister Modi later said in a tweet: “I thank @POTUS @JoeBiden and @FLOTUS @DrBiden for hosting me at the White House today. We had a great conversation on several topics.” The National Science Foundation (NSF) hosted Modi, where they participated in an event highlighting shared priorities for education and the workforce between India and the United States.
President Joe Biden and the first lady will host a state dinner on the South Lawn of the White House on Thursday, with 400 guests expected to attend. Prime Minister Modi’s visit also included his address to a joint session of the US Congress.
The White House also said that as an official gift, the President and First Lady will present Prime Minister Modi with an antique handcrafted American bookshelf from the early 20th century.
They will also gift Modi with a vintage American camera, along with an archival facsimile of George Eastman’s first Kodak camera patent, and a hardcover book on American wildlife photography.
Modi, who arrived in Washington from New York, had earlier in the day officiated a historic event at UN headquarters to mark the 9th International Yoga Day, attended by UN officials, diplomats and dignitaries.
At the invitation of President Biden and the First Lady, he will visit the United States from June 21 to 24.
