Hyderabad: According to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs, the current waiting period for an interview appointment for a non-immigrant B1 or B2 visa in Hyderabad is 994 calendar days.

If you’re planning to travel to the U.S. soon, you should be prepared for a long wait, as the wait period for applicants for U.S. business (B-1) and tourist (B-2) visas is now nearly three years.

Wait times for US visas in India have hit record highs since the country resumed applications after the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Due to high staffing and many pandemic-related disruptions, appointment demand across all visa categories is high, and wait times for most routine non-immigrant visa appointments at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi and consulates in Chennai and Hyderabad can be lengthy , Kolkata and Mumbai,” a notice posted by the US Embassy and Consulates in India on its official website https://in.usembassy.gov/visas/

The waiting period for first-time visitor visa applications or other applications requiring an interview is almost three years. As the number of applications continues to climb, the long waiting time of three years in India will soon be crossed.

The U.S. Department of State has authorized consular officers to waive interview requirements for certain categories of visa applicants through December 31, 2022.

“This new authorization applies to travelers applying for F, H-1, H-3, H-4, non-basket L, M, O, P, Q and Academic J visas if they have previously been granted any type of visa , are applying for visas in their own country of citizenship or residence,” the US embassy states on its official website.

While this authorization does not apply to applicants who were previously rejected but not subsequently waived or overcome, they added.

Interview-exempt students or exchange visitors receive priority with a 1-day wait time, compared to 374 days for interview-exempt students and 228 days for interview-exempt visitors for B1 and B2 visa categories. The waiting period is 366 days for Petition Based temps and 311 days for non-interviewers.
