Utakash: The humble tomato is now fetching high prices in the north, where a kitchen staple in Gangotri Dham sells for Rs 250 a kg and in the Uttarkashi region for Rs 250 a kg. 180 to 200 rupees.

Tomatoes have suddenly become more expensive in the region, according to a vegetable seller.

“Consumers are bearing the brunt of the increase in the price of tomatoes in North Kashi. People are not even willing to buy them. In Gangotri, Yamunotri, tomatoes are being sold at Rs 200-250 per kg,” vegetable seller Rakesh told ANI.

Many have attributed the sharp rise in vegetable prices to a widespread heat wave in key tomato-producing regions, as well as torrential rains that disrupted supply chains.

Tomatoes also have a relatively short shelf life, which is also thought to have an impact on their prices.

In Chennai, tomatoes are currently selling at Rs 100-130 per kg.

Faced with rising prices, the Tamil Nadu government has started selling tomatoes at a subsidized price of Rs 60 per kg at ration stores in the state capital, Chennai, in a bid to give consumers some respite amid spiraling prices. .

Like many states, tomato prices in Karnataka have also surged in recent days.

Tomato prices in Bengaluru are Rs 101-121 per kg. The reason for the high prices is the sudden rise in temperatures in March and April, which caused pests to attack tomato yields and increased market prices.
