Warangal district ready to release Rs 1.94 crore fish fingerlings

Warangal: The fisheries department is now preparing to release Rs 1.94 lakh fry in 703 ponds and reservoirs in the region in August as the state government pledges to promote caste-based occupations and boost economic empowerment of local fisher communities.

The state government has started releasing fry and juveniles to waterbodies free of charge in 2017-18, with a 100 per cent subsidy to provide employment to fishermen.

To facilitate this initiative, a tender process has been initiated to select the contractor responsible for the supply of fry.Regional Fisheries Officer Naresh Kumar Naidu said Telangana today Fishermen in the area earn Rs. Last year it was Rs 7552 crore.

These species are released into ponds and reservoirs by fisheries officials during the monsoon season. It is worth noting that the Warangal region has a considerable number of 693 ponds, 9 major water bodies and 1 reservoir at Mylaram, Rayaparthi Mandal.

Some 182 fisherman’s cooperatives, including 40 women’s unions, are actively involved in selling fish to generate income. There are 14,350 people working in the fishing industry in the area, 3,400 of whom are women.

Taking advantage of the annual flow of monsoon water into the tanks and reservoirs, the government ensures the release of fish species into these water bodies. The scheduled release of the species is scheduled for August. Last year, about Rs 1.91 crore of fingerlings worth about Rs 1.3 billion were released and a total of 9,420 tons of fish was caught. With the market price of Rs 80 per kg of fish last year, fishermen earned a handsome income of Rs 7,555.2 crore.

Naresh Kumar said the state government has set a target to release 1.94 billion rupees of fingerlings in 703 ponds and reservoirs this year.

“After winning the bid, the contractor will be responsible for supplying fry to the designated water bodies from August and the government will provide the necessary funds,” he said, adding that they are also considering the release of fry to the Mylaram reservoir.
