Hyderabad: A total of 18 Strategic Narra Development Plan (SNDP) projects aimed at revamping the existing stormwater drainage network in different parts of the state capital are expected to be completed by December.
Some of the notable areas where SNDP renovation work in Hyderabad is going on are Bathula Cheruvu to Injapur Nala, Bandlaguda Cheruvu to Nagole Cheruvu, Nalla Pochamma Temple Bridge and another bridge along Vegetable Market Road near Nagamaiah Kunta nala.
The SNDP is doing renovation work at 18 different sites, including building bridges/culverts, repairing existing gutters, widening storm drains, constructing retaining walls near small storm gutters, and constructing box gutters.
As the renovation works enter its final stages, where feasible, stormwater drains are being covered with prefabricated panels and some drains are barricaded using connecting mesh. “In the deep drains, we also put up banners to remind people,” a senior GHMC official said.
To tackle urban flooding in and around the city, the Telangana government had earlier imposed an administrative penalty of Rs 985.45 crore under Phase 1 of the SNDP aimed at revamping the stormwater drainage network within the GHMC’s restricted jurisdiction and surrounding cities Local Bodies (ULBs).
Of these, 35 used Rs. Rs 737.45 crore was proposed in the GHMC quota and 21 projects were proposed in ULB outside GHMC for a total of Rs 248 crore.
“In the GHMC area, while 18 works will be completed in December and another 13 will be completed in January or February at the latest, the target is to complete the entire SNDP project in March,” the official said.
Meanwhile, GHMC is also carrying out dredging works on existing storm drains to ensure unimpeded flow of water during downpours and monsoons.
The total length of storm drains maintained by GHMC is 1,302 km and during 2021-22, 356 desilting works have been carried out at a cost of Rs 444.5 crore. To date, more than 460,000 cubic meters of silt has been removed from the open channels and Narras, the officials added.
