Hyderabad: Students whose native language is not Telugu but who pursue simple Telugu as a compulsory language may have 20% or 20 marks as a passing mark out of 100 in the Category IX and X exams conducted by the School Education Department.
The state government has passed the Telugu Language (Compulsory Teaching of Telugu in Schools) Act 2018 to make learning Telugu mandatory for students in schools affiliated with different boards in the state including SSC, CBSE, ICSE and IB. This implementation has been phased in since the 2018-19 school year, beginning with Classes I and VI.
During the previous school year, it was implemented in classes I, II, III, IV, VI, VII, VIII, and IX in all schools across the state. This school year (2022-23), classes I to X in all schools will have Telugu as a language as a compulsory subject. However, the government exempts the study of Telugu as a compulsory language for students from other states to enroll in Class 8 and above in Telangana. But the student must choose two other Indian languages that he/she has learned up to level VII from the Part I Indian languages available in the state – Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit, Marathi, Ka Nada, Tamil, Bengali, Gujarati etc. as first and second language up to grade X.
To help non-Telugu speaking children learn the language easily, the department has introduced simple textbooks. The “Tenepalukulu” textbook for grade IV and the “Vennela” textbook for grades VI-X are developed by the department.
For students whose native language is Telugu and studying in Telugu and English-medium schools, the Department has developed the standard Telugu textbook ‘Jabili’ for Grade IV, ‘Navavasantham’ for Grade VI-VIII, and ‘Navavasantham’ for Grade IX -X class developed “Singidi”. “It is planned to have 20 percent or 20 marks in the exam as a passing mark for learners of Simple Telugu. However, students learning Standard Telugu will have 35 percent as a passing mark out of 100,” an official said .
