Visakhapatnam: Mayor G. Hari Venkata Kumari announced Wednesday that 38 swimming experts have been selected to protect visitors to the city’s beaches.
She told reporters here that the tryouts were held at the end of last month. 38 swimmers were selected in the past, but after allegations emerged during the selection process, new trials were held in which 175 athletes, including 38 swimmers already selected, took part. However, she explained that only 12 of the 38 were eligible.
Municipal Commissioner P. Rajababu said the services of the Naval Swimming Department were enlisted to pick divers.
Apart from these 38, six others have been selected for standby and divers will be on standby near Rama Krishna Beach, Sagar Nagar, Bheemunipatnam, Jodugullapalem, Lumbini Park, Pedajalaripeta and Coastal Battery, he said, adding that swimmers Will be stationed on a special platform, easily identifiable in uniform, protective equipment, ropes and binoculars. Robot services will also be provided, he revealed.
After Gujarat, Vizag coast is the best for surfing and wave patterns will be studied to introduce the waters for surfing, he said.
