Students should have already arranged transportation from the airport to temporary accommodation

Hello readers! Last week, we discussed what students should expect at ports of entry and how to go through airport procedures. This week, we discuss what students should expect when they arrive on American university campuses.
As mentioned previously (at Step 5, Part I), the student should have already arranged transportation from the airport to the temporary residence. Temporary accommodation is required if the student’s long-term accommodation is not available upon the student’s arrival.
Students can contact the Indian or South Asian Students Association or the International Student Services Office (if any) at their university. Students may ask the former if there are any Indian students or families associated with the university willing to host them temporarily. The Office of International Student Services may provide information regarding the availability of airport pick-up for new students. Otherwise, students can use the airport’s taxi or shuttle services.
US colleges and universities typically require students to take a New Student Orientation (NSO) class at the beginning of the semester. Students should be prepared to attend the International Student Orientation and any required course-specific orientations.
Other logistics to be aware of:
• How and where to open a bank account
• How to get to and from campus – research student bus passes and university transport
• Best phone service provider in the area
• Where to buy essentials (US/Indian groceries, toiletries, clothes, etc.)
• University campus layout
• How to register for classes
Initially, students may also experience jet lag. Setting a sleep schedule for the correct time zone and remembering to eat regularly will help with this.
Finally, it is critical that students pay attention to their university’s Covid-19 procedures and the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) website for guidance on international travel to and from the United States.
For more information on vaccination requirements, see: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/proof-of-vaccination.html
For updated guidance see: https://travel.state.gov/ and www.cbp.gov for testing information.
Next week, we’ll be discussing culture shock!
