Hyderabad: In a major development, the Center on Friday approved the environmental clearance for the Chanaka-Korata Barrage for the Penganga River Interstate Irrigation Project in Adilabad district.
The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Climate Change has approved the Environmental Permit for the Telangana Barrage and Canal Works Public Components Construction Project under the Expert Assessment Committee (EAC). The order maintained that environmental clearance of the Maharashtra part of the project’s canal works could be considered after submission of necessary forest clearance.
In November last year, the Jal Shakti Ministry approved the construction of the Chanaka-Korata Barrage and the Choutpally Hanumanth Reddy Enhanced Irrigation Scheme in Nizamabad district and the Mukteshwar (Chinna Kaleshwaram) Enhanced Irrigation Scheme (LIS) in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district.
The long-pending interstate project became a reality as the TRS government conducted a series of consultations with its Maharashtra counterparts in 2016. This is one of three projects undertaken jointly by Telangana and Maharashtra at a cost of Rs 15.68 billion. Hence, in 2018 barrages, Works on pump stations and canals.
The barrage is intended to provide irrigation facilities for the four Mandal ryots under the Boath and Adilabad road sections. All 23 gates have completed the barrage construction and erection. The storage capacity of Chanaka-Korata is about 0.8 tmcft. A 38,000-acre ayacut will be irrigated using gravity canals, and a 13,500-acre ayacut has been proposed to use two motors with a capacity of 5.5 MW. Upstream of the barrage, another 10,000 acres of land on which the Pipalkoti barrage is proposed have yet to be constructed.
On 6 October 1975, the then Governments of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh entered into an understanding for the Lower Penganga Project to be a joint interstate project. However, the former Associated Press did not make much progress.
According to the interstate agreement, the Maharashtra government has to construct the Rajapet and Pimparad barrages. However, the Maharashtra state government has yet to start works. However, Telangana has already completed the Chanaka-Korata Barrage, of which Maharashtra will have a 20% share of the water resources. Meanwhile, Telangana will get a 50% water share in Rajapet and a 30% water share in the Pimparad barrage being built by Maharashtra.
