Dhaka: Bangladesh survived a late blitz from the injured Rohit Sharma to win on a slender run of five to take a clean 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series at the Bengal National Stadium in Sherlock on Wednesday.
With his left thumb covered in bandages, the India captain’s half-century of heroics could not save India’s losing streak in Bangladesh’s ODI series as Mustafizur Rahman defended 20 runs in the last match for His team won.
Ebadot Hossain fired again with the ball and picked up three wickets, while centurion Mehidy Hasan Miraz also chipped in with two scalps. Shreyas Iyer topped India’s score with 82 in a patient innings.
India faltered at 208/7 in an ebb and flow game with no hope of winning in the chase, but the Indian captain came out to bat and tackle the leather, giving Bangladesh a huge scare. The skipper attempted a late innings heist but failed to deliver a hard hit on the last ball of the innings.
India started off chasing star batsman Virat Kohli with Shikhar Dhawan instead of Rohit Sharma. The Indian captain did not start after injuring his hand while skidding the cordon.
India got off to a bad start as they lost Virat and Dhawan in their first three games. Virat went on when he tried to pull Ebadot Hossain away and was sent off for 5(6).
When Mustafizur Rahman threw the ball sharply in, Dhawan was taken by surprise by a bounce and the left-hander could only wear one when the ball hovered in the air and was hit by Mehidy Hasan Miraz. Gloves.
Shreyas Iyer and Wahington Sundar tried to see the first 10 overs, the ball was moving around and probing the batsmen but the left-hander was dismissed on the last ball in the 10th and India ended up shaky at 39/3 for the first powerplay .
Sundar was promoted up the order given his recent performances with the bat in the final innings, but the all-rounder failed to take his chances and was dismissed by Shakib Al Hasan trying to drive the ball into his legs with a hard hand.
India’s top scorer KL Rahul of the last inning came to the crease and looked set to stabilize the Indian innings with Iyer, who had been in top form in ODIs in 2022, but the right-hander left in the 19th inning.
Rahul was dismissed for 14(28) by Hassan Miraz when he attempted to cross over on a pitch that lacked bounce and was hit vertically in front of the stumps.
Left-handed all-rounder Axar Patel stepped up to the crease and showed his prowess for the Willows with an excellent 50. The southpaw was fluent in his batting skills and took the pressure off the scoreboard while letting India catch up.
The lefty finds the boundary on a regular basis, which helps Iyer function as a plate anchor.
Axar hit 50 in the 36th when Iyer hit 50 with 69 in the 25th over.
The duo cruised with their partners and looked certain to take India home, but the centurion in the first innings got rid of Iyer against the run of the game and helped Bangladesh pull one back.
Iyer took 82 (102) and teamed with a fifth wicket for 107 to keep India in the reckoning.
Bangladesh got rid of batsman Axar Patel in the 39th inning to thwart India’s hopes of successfully chasing the target to keep the series alive.
With Rohit Sharma’s batsman sidelined, it was the perfect platform for all-rounders Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar to put in a match-winning performance and cap the all-rounders’ place, but neither player was able to make an impact.
Thakur scored 7 (23) before being stumped by Shakib while Chahal, who was batting with a hamstring injury, scored 11 (18).
Rohit Sharma walked into the strike zone with a thickly bandaged left thumb in an attempt to take India over the baseline and made an unbeaten 51(28) innings. He smashed five colossal sixes and three boundaries but fell short as he saw India’s home slugging.
India needed the last 20 and were five points behind as a heroic effort from the injured skipper fell short.
Earlier Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mahmudullah steadied Bangladesh after an early strike as they set up a partnership of 148 for the seventh wicket ties to challenge India at 271/7.
Miraz remained unbeaten with 100 off 83 balls as Bangladesh’s top scorer, while Mahmudullah hit a crucial 77 for 96 overs. For India, Washington Sundar scored three runs, while Mohammad Siraj and Umran Malik took two wickets each.
Brief score: Brief score: Bangladesh 271/7 (Mehidy Hasan Miraz 100*, Mahmudullah 77, Washington Sundar 3-37) vs India 266-9 (Shreyas Iyer 82, Axar Patel 56, Ebadot Hossain 3-45).
