Washington: Indian-Americans celebrated the swearing-in of Indian-born Rishi Sunak as British Prime Minister on Tuesday, saying it was an important day for the Indian community abroad.
“This is a Diwali gift to the diaspora. Rishi is already on the list of Indiaspora government leaders and we welcome him and wish him all the best when he takes office!” said Silicon Valley entrepreneur and Indiaspora founder MR Rangaswami.
“Diwali this year is special because the UK has its first prime minister of Indian origin. Congrats,” said Gita Gopinath, First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund. Dr. Sampat Shivangi, chair of the Mississippi Mental Health Commission, praised Sunak’s scripted history. “What a proud moment for Indians to see Rishi at the top of the throne… Just 75 years ago, the British were the rulers of colonial India,” he said.
Dr Shivangi said he had known Rishi and his family for several years because their relatives were from Athani, Karnataka. “Sudha Murthy’s (Sunak’s mother-in-law) father was a professor at my medical school,” he recalls.
“I look forward to the successful transformation of the UK economy in the coming days…I hope Sunak brings glory and great credibility to his country, the Indian diaspora and his ancestral land,” he said.
Al Maison, a real estate businessman from New York, hailed Sunak as the first British prime minister of South Asian descent, the first Hindu and the youngest person to hold the position.
In a statement, Canadian MP Chandra Arya congratulated Sunak on becoming Britain’s first Hindu prime minister. “May his achievements inspire a new generation of Canadians to engage more actively in public service,” he said.
