Amaravati: A cyclone warning has been issued for the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh, officials said on Thursday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cyclone warning for northern Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh.
This came after a deep low in the southwest and southeast adjacent to the Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic storm.
The IMD said the storm has been named “Mandous,” pronounced “Man-Dous.”
Under the influence of the cyclone, heavy to very heavy rains are likely to occur over the next three days in remote areas of Prakasam, SRSP Nellore and Tirupati districts of southern coastal Andhra Pradesh and Chittoor, Annamayya and YSR Kadapa districts of Rayalaseema.
Andhra Pradesh’s National Disaster Management Agency said the alert message was sent to more than one million users through the Common Alert Protocol.
Authorities have been instructed to regularly monitor the progress of the cyclone.
Five National Disaster Response Forces (NDRF) and four National Disaster Response Forces (SDRF) are ready for rescue.
According to the IMD, the cyclonic storm was centered at 0530 hours, about 530 kilometers east-southeast of Karaikal and about 620 kilometers southeast of Chennai.
“It is likely to move west-northwest and pass through northern Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, and between Pondicherry and Sriharikota adjoining the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh around midnight on December 9. During the period, the maximum sustained wind speed was 65-75 km/h and the gust speed was 85 km/h,” the IMD bulletin said.
Most of the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Karaikal received light to moderate rainfall under the influence of Mandous on December 8, with a high probability of heavy rainfall in remote areas, while the southern coast is safe. The adjoining areas of Dera Pradesh and Rayalaseema saw isolated heavy rainfall.

Northern Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema and remote areas of southern Andhra Pradesh may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall on December 10, with rainfall likely to decrease to light to moderate in most areas.
