Cyclone Mocha to hit Andhra Pradesh this week, IMD warns

Amaravati: Cyclone Mocha, the first cyclone of the year, is approaching Andhra Pradesh. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Andhra Pradesh may experience heavy rain this month. Cyclone Mocha may form over the southeastern Bay of Bengal around May 6, and a low pressure area may form around May 7. On May 8, it most likely merged into a low pressure over the southeastern Bay of Bengal. It is likely to become a cyclonic storm as it moves northward into the central Bay of Bengal.

“The system has been under surveillance and is regularly monitored. Details of its path and strengthening will be provided after the low pressure area develops,” the IMD said in their statement.

Cyclone Mocha impacts Odisha and Andhra Pradesh with heavy to torrential rain. The IMD has warned that the weather in Andhra Pradesh will change significantly in the next 48 hours and asked farmers to take all necessary precautions to protect their agricultural and horticultural crops.

“Thunderstorms with lightning and gusts of 40-50 km/h may occur in remote areas over Yanam at NCAP and SCAP. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusts of 30-40 km/h may occur over remote areas over Rayalaseema,” IMD’s May 4 weather forecast.
