New York: Two 14-year-old boys were killed and two others were injured when a drunk Indian pickup truck driver crashed into a car on Long Island, New York, police said.
Nassau County police said Thursday that Amandeep Singh, 34, was driving his 2019 Dodge Ram southbound on the northbound lanes of North Broadway in Jericho on Wednesday when he crashed into a 2019 Alfa Romeo sedan. There were four teenagers inside.
Two teenagers — identified as Drew Hassenbein and Ethan Falkowitz — were pronounced dead at the scene, along with two others aged 16, according to Fox News. Teenagers aged 1 and 17 were taken to a local hospital for injuries.
Nassau County Police Detective Capt. Stephen Fitzpatrick described the scene as “probably one of the most catastrophic scenes I’ve seen in a long time.”
Singer, a Roslyn, N.Y., resident fled the scene after the initial collision and crashed into another vehicle, a 2023 Volvo driven by a 49-year-old woman and a 16-year-old male passenger, police said, adding , the two car victims were released after receiving treatment at the scene.
Singh was arrested that day and was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
He was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, first-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree manslaughter, leaving the scene of a fatal vehicle crash, driving while intoxicated and two counts of second-degree assault.
Singh was arraigned in Hempstead 1st District Court on Thursday.
Singer’s blood alcohol concentration was twice the legal limit at the time of the collision, according to prosecutors.
He had prior convictions for DUI (driving after drinking) and gang assault as a teenager, the court heard.
His next court appearance is scheduled for May 8.
