Surya pets: In Yerravaram, the bond between the farmer and the field is different. Kodad mandal village is 54 kilometers from the Suryapet district headquarters, where 80 percent of the population makes their living from agriculture, which explains why the village’s more than 150 farmlands are special to them.
The bond between people and fields has witnessed that every farmland in Yerravaram has its own name and most of them have been known by the same name for more than 50 years.
From Aapilla, Padichenu and Pashupolam to Lambadichenu, Bandachenu and Yedlabedu, the names of these fields depend on their geographical significance or in relation to their owners.
However, despite changes in owners over the years, the names persist and help farmers and agricultural workers locate fields.
Veerapelli Venkataiah, a farmer in the village, said that people address the farmland by name, like they call each other, to express their love for the land.
Venkataiah owns a six-acre agricultural land known as Ranganipolam. Ranga was the owner of the land about five years ago but the name has stuck to this day and the place and its surrounding areas were identified as being in or near Ranganipolam, he said.
Another farmer, Baru Shivaiah, said some fields and their names were also popular because of their high yields. This practice has been around for a long time. Nowadays, when farmers ask farmers from other places to cultivate, they don’t mention the name of the place, but only the name of the place. Shivaiah added that they can find their way through the name.
