Doha: Qatari authorities said a fire broke out Saturday in a building under construction in a newly built city that was due to host a World Cup match later in the evening, but caused no injuries.
Qatar’s interior ministry said the fire broke out just after noon local time on an island that is part of the city of Lusail, which hosts several matches during the tournament, including Saturday night’s match between Argentina and Mexico .
The fire was about 3.5 kilometers (2 miles) from Lusail Stadium.
It belched thick black smoke into the sky and could be seen from a market in central Doha as World Cup fans shuttled between shops and restaurants.
