Toronto: Harkirat Singh has become the first turbaned Sikh to be appointed deputy mayor of Brampton, Canada, for a four-year term from 2022 to 2026.

As Deputy Mayor, Singh will chair City Council and other committee meetings and undertake ceremonial and civic engagement duties on behalf of the Mayor in his absence or absence.
“I am proud Councilor Harkirat Singh to serve as Deputy Mayor for this term of the City Council. He is a dedicated, hardworking Councilor with a proven track record of delivering the best possible service to Brampton,” said Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said.

Prior to serving as a city councillor, Singh served for four years as a school trustee on the Peel District School Board.
As a trustee, he is a member of the Audit Committee, Instructional Program/Curriculum Committee and Sports Architecture and Planning Committee.

In addition to his role as a trustee, he was a two-and-a-half-year professor at Lambton College and two years at Humber College, teaching marketing and entrepreneurship.
To promote community development, Singh conducts mentoring workshops and job fairs in local schools.
In 2016 he was nominated for a Mentor Award by the Brampton Board of Trades for his work with youth.
He holds a BA from the University of Toronto, majoring in Economics and Public Administration.
He is an MSc. BA in Economics from City University, London and MBA from Schulich Business School with a specialization in Marketing, Entrepreneurship and Organizational Behavior.
