Sao Paulo: Football legend Pele was “transferred to hospice” in hospital after doctors stopped chemotherapy, which his body did not respond to during his battle with colon cancer, according to Brazilian daily Folha Sao Paulo.
Bailey, 82, whose full name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, was admitted to Albert Einstein Hospital on Tuesday with “general swelling” and “heart failure.”
An update on Thursday said the three-time World Cup winner was in “stabilization”. However, a report from Folha de Sao Paulo on Saturday said Bailey was no longer responding to the chemotherapy he had been receiving since last September.
“He is now receiving palliative care, which will not undergo invasive testing or treatment. Palliative care is for patients with potentially life-threatening diseases or conditions and end-of-life care,” the report said.
Many consider Pele to be the greatest football player of all time.
He won three World Cup titles with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and 1970, and scored 643 goals in 659 appearances for the Brazilian club Santos. Throughout his career and retirement, Pele has received multiple individual and team awards for his performances on the field, record-breaking achievements and his legacy in the sport.
