Hyderabad: The collection of property tax by the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has crossed the Rs 1,000 crore mark in six months, a record for the first six months of any financial year.
GHMC has 30 circles that collected a total of Rs 1,165.17 crore from April to October 28 this year, with Serilingampally circle topping the list with Rs 171.23 crore, followed by Jubilee Hills circle (Rs 119.49 crore) and Khairatabad circle ( 92 crore) million).
Most property owners are paying their taxes online this year, while some are paying through the Mee Seva Centre. In addition to tax collectors collecting taxes from several homeowners, others pay taxes by visiting the GHMC Civic Center.
With the one-off scheme (OTS) launched in July, Rs 9,278 crore was collected through 47,205 assessments, which was part of the Rs 1,165 crore revenue generated from April to October 28 this year.
OTS, which provides relief to those struggling with property tax arrears, ends on October 31. Under the program, the state government has ordered a waiver of 90 percent of property tax accrued delinquency interest. However, taxpayers should clear out the principal amount of taxes prior to 2021-22 in one lump sum plus 10% of the accrued interest.
The plan is to further increase the tax levied under the OTS, as part of the revenue generating activity, the GHMC Commissioner has ordered that 30 October, Sunday, will be the working day associated with this revenue generating activity.
“As the OTS ends on Monday, debt collectors will visit the homes on Sunday and ask people to clear the delinquent interest. The activity will also be monitored by senior officials of the company,” a GHMC official said.
