Hyderabad: Tri-committee traffic police are gearing up for enhanced drink-driving checks on all accident-prone road sections in Hyderabad on New Year’s Eve.
Incidents related to drink-driving have been identified, including an earlier reported fatal crash. Commercial areas with a high density of bars, pubs and leisure venues will be on the lookout for traffic police.
Equipped with breathalyzers, teams led by traffic police inspectors will seal off these vulnerable stretches of road and carry out inspections.
“Compared to previous years, we have more female traffic police. They will all be deployed to conduct checks on female drivers. On New Year’s Eve, we will go all out on city roads,” said a senior officer of the Hyderabad traffic police. “
The traffic police in Hyderabad are determined to prevent road accidents and as part of these efforts, all overpasses in the city, including the PVNR highway, may be closed to motorists.
“Cases will be filed against anyone found driving a vehicle while intoxicated and will be presented in court. Similar cases will be recorded as reckless driving and performing stunts on a bicycle, etc.,” the official said.
Offenders will be punished with a fine of 10,000 rupees or a jail term of up to six months, suspension of driving license for three months or permanent suspension of driving license, officials insist. Minors should not be driving the vehicles, and if caught, owners will be held accountable, officials said.
In Rachakonda and Cyberabad, the outer ring road will be restricted and traffic in the direction of the airport will be required to show some evidence such as air tickets etc.
The traffic police also instructed managers of star-rated hotels, taverns, clubs, and bars to post slogans to raise people’s awareness of the dangers of drunk driving and the penalties for being caught. Authorities are also urging management to promote the concept of a “designated driver for a day”, whereby a person in a group who has not consumed alcohol will drive the vehicle.
