Hyderabad: Volatile weather conditions mark 2022 in Hyderabad. Summers are relatively less harsh, while the monsoons are fierce, and the mercury keeps jumping to lower and higher ranges in winter.
Although the year began with record lows in January, the cold dissipated quickly, and in stark contrast to February, a heat wave gripped the city between March and May.
Compared to 2016 and 2017, the hottest years with mercury jumping to 43C, this summer has been mild as the highest temperature recorded was around 42C.
However, there was an unusual heat wave in April, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius for 10 consecutive days. On April 30, the mercury reached 42 degrees Celsius.
Based on 2013-22 data, Uppal, Kapra, Qutubullapur, Serilingampally, Khairathabad, Shaikpet, Asifnagar, Bahadurpura and Saidabad have high summer temperatures (>45°C). In the rest of the region, temperatures were below 45°C.
During this rainy season, the rain god is extra generous to the state capital. It received 742.9 millimeters of rainfall compared to the average of 562.1 millimeters.
After a light rain in June, the season began to change in July as the city received more than 125 percent of its rainfall. The highest rainfall for the month occurs between July 6 and 13. While August fell short of rainfall, September’s rainfall was the highest on record in a decade.
On September 26, some areas recorded 9.1 to 12.7 centimeters of rainfall in just 3 hours. Mehdipatnam was worst affected at 11.25 cm. September 6, 2017 recorded the highest rainfall of 9 cm in 24 hours.
The monsoon retreated with a one-week delay and finally receded on 22 October. Trimulgherry, one of the oldest suburbs over the period, took just three hours to surpass its monthly average on October 12. The typical rainfall in October is 107.7mm, but the total rainfall for the day reached 122.8mm.
According to a report by the Telangana State Development Planning Association, the number of wet spells and heavy rainfall events has increased over the past 18 years. It added that Patancheru, Ramachandrapuram, Alwal, Malkajgiri, Uppal, Balanagar, Qutubullapur, Trimulgherry, Secunderabad and Musheerabad had the highest rainfall.
Meanwhile, the city got an early taste of winter as the mercury began to drop in late October. On October 24, the minimum temperature dropped to 14.9 degrees Celsius, the lowest in 54 years. The third lowest temperature of 15.1 degrees Celsius was recorded on 26 October.
Hyderabad typically sees the highest rainfall during the northeast monsoon season, which prevails between October and December. But October and November end with a considerable rain deficit. Last month, the minimum temperature dropped below 15 degrees Celsius.
