Hyderabad: The road was opened to the public on Sunday, a day after the Indian Racing League (IRL) held at the newly paved track at NTR Marg.
While concrete barriers built for safety block motorists’ view of Hussain Sagar, city dwellers speeding by on the road say the experience is surreal.
“I take this route every day. But when I drove by the track today, it felt very different, fresh. The road is very flat and driving is a breeze,” said Sri Teja, an architecture student.
The track along the Hussain Sagar river is being paved for the Formula E World Championship in February 2023. Sunday’s game is the first of two races to be held before the main event.
Rishita, a company employee who lives in Khairatabad, said it would be great if other parts of Hyderabad had such roads. “The roads they built for the race are flat and pothole-free. That’s what we need. Speed bumps are needed, but imagine how much easier it would be to drive in the city if we had roads like this,” she said .
Speed bumps and rumble strips will soon be in place to address safety concerns, officials said. “As of now, we have no casualties, but we are coordinating with the traffic police to check where speed bumps are needed. Once we figure this out, the necessary steps will be prioritized,” said a GHMC official from the Khairatabad area.
The route has been blocked for the past few weeks due to ongoing construction of the 2.7km FIA graded street circuit.
