Hyderabad: Pet owners and animal lovers in the city will finally be able to say a dignified goodbye to their animal companions as the city prepares to open its first animal crematorium of its kind in Fathullaguda, near Nagor, on Dec. 6.
The crematorium is a joint effort between People for Animals (PFA), an animal welfare organization accredited by the Animal Welfare Council of India, and the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
According to PFA chief operating officer Dr. Amulya, the crematorium was built to provide pet owners with all the amenities they need to peacefully perform their last rites and have time to mourn.
“In a city like Hyderabad with a high number of pets, there are only a few places that provide space to bury pets. We see that people are having difficulty burying their pets and that’s why we came up with this initiative. After more than two years of hard work, we are delighted that the facility finally opened on Tuesday,” she said, adding that the cost of installing the machine was more than Rs 50 lakh.
Built on 3 acres of land owned by GHMC, the crematorium is based on LPG and designed according to Central Pollution Control Board guidelines. “The place will be smoke-free, using LPG as fuel to incinerate and dispose of small and medium-sized animals,” Amulya explained.
Animals of any kind can be cremated at the site with a small donation which will go towards the PFA’s rescue services. After cremation, the pet parents will receive the ashes, and the pet parents can also choose to plant a sapling next to the ashes as a memorial to the pet.
Details on how to book a slot and conduct a cremation will be announced on the day of the inauguration.
