Dakshina Kannada: A man in the region’s Mangaluru city has been charged with allegedly forcing a Hindu girl to convert to Islam, sexually assaulting her and blackmailing her, police said Tuesday.
According to police, the girl has lodged a complaint with Khaleel, the owner of a mobile phone shop. Mangaluru Women’s Police have launched an investigation into the case.
The girl worked in an upscale shop in the Bikarnakatte area, where she met Khaleel at a mobile phone shop and struck up a friendship. Khalil allegedly used the bond to orchestrate the crime.
He promises her a good job and financial support, and takes her to his home in Kalap. The victim said he introduced her to a group of women there who forced her to convert to Islam.
They made her read the Qur’an and make her do namaz.
After this, the defendant sexually assaulted her.
He changed the victim’s name to Ayesha and threatened to get her fired if she revealed the incident. She was also forced to wear a “burqa” at all times.
Police have been charged under IPC sections 354 (Assault or inflicting criminal violence on a woman with intent to injure her dignity), 354 (a) (engagement of physical contact and provocative conduct involving unwanted sexual making, posting) making a complaint or disseminating any statement intended to incite any crime against any other class or community), 34 (an act done by several persons to promote a common intention) and columns 3 and 5 of the Anti-Conversion Act.
An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
