Hyderabad: Hyderabad Sunrisers batsmen suffered another defeat as they failed to chase a modest total to suffer a five-match loss to Kolkata Knights at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Uppal on Thursday.
After limiting the visitors to 171/9 in 20 matches, the Sunrisers’ batsmen were disastrous and ended at 166/8, their sixth defeat in nine matches. Defending nine points in the previous game, Varun Chakravarthy made a sensational shot while allowing just three to lead the Cavaliers to their fourth win of the season.
Chasing the target, Mayank hit several boundaries from Vaibhav Arora and six from Harshit Rana in the third innings, but he was dismissed for 18 for 11 balls (2×4, 1×6) in the same over. Shardul Thakur cheaply sent Abhishek Sharma to the pavilion. Impact player Rahul Tripathi looked promising hitting several boundaries and a six from Andre Russell before being caught deep in the thin leg after a nine-ball 20-off , as the hosts are 53/3 from their first six fixtures.
Harry Brook’s poor form continued as he was ruled a duck lbw after left-arm turntable Anu Kulroy was scrutinized. With his wicket, the hosts were at 75/4 after 10 overs. Heinrich Klaassen then hit Roy with a couple of sixes in the 11th over, while Markram hit consecutive Chakravasi next. Klaassen put Lanner down six shots on the next play, dropping the equation from 42 to 58.
Thakur, however, broke a 70-run partnership when he dismissed Klaassen (36 for 20) when the South African was stuck at Cow’s Corner. Captain Aiden Markram (41 for 40) was next to leave as he was caught long-range while trying to smash Arora’s short ball at the 17th.
Arora came back in the 19th to remove Marco Jansen (1) from the first ball. But Samad and Bhuvneshwar Kumar combined for 12 runs in the final innings, reducing the required runs to nine.
In the last bowling over, Varun Chakravarty bowled away Abdul Samad (21) at the third ball. Samad tried to clear the middle wicket boundary and was caught by Roy. With seven runs needed in the final three innings, Varen dropped just one to give his side the win.
Earlier, Jansen provided a perfect start with a double over Rahmanullah Gurbaz (0) and Venkatesh Iyer in the second over. Gurgaz (0) was caught by Harry Brook in midfield, while Iyer (7) put the bouncer on goalkeeper Klaasen. Karthik Tyagi replaced Umran Malik in his first game of the season before dismissing a dangerous Jason Roy (20 for 19) as the visitors scored 49/3 in a power play.
Rinku Singh hit consecutive Markram boundaries in the ninth, while skipper Rana joined the party, hitting a Tyagi boundary and two sixes in the ensuing overs to take their side to 90/3 at the halfway mark . Markram, however, let his opponent Rana (42 for 31; 3×4, 3×6) end a fourth wicket tie for 61 (40 balls). He has done a great job of running backwards in his own bowling.
Andre Russell’s next man looked ominously hitting Markram and Marchand for six each. But Marchand got away from the dangerous Caribbean in the next over when the batsman made him easy at this point after striking 24 for 15 balls (1 x 4, 2 x 6) The ground catch was given to Natarayan. T Nataraj then knocked out Shardul Thakur in the 18th over and came back in the 20th over to end Rinku Singh’s stay (46 for 35). He then ran Harshit Rana out as the Sunrisers conceded 42 runs for four wickets in their last five overs.
