University-affiliated faculties will now be allowed to appoint professionals in related fields as faculty members without mandatory doctorate terms.

Hyderabad: Faculties of Engineering, Pharmacy, MBA and MCA will now be allowed to appoint eminent professionals in the relevant fields without mandatory PhD provision as faculty, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU)-Hyderabad has decided to start from this academic year Begin to introduce the concept of teaching by practice.
The move by the university will come in handy for universities that otherwise find it difficult to find faculty members with the necessary degrees to teach new courses such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science and robotics.
There is no mandatory formal academic qualification, such as a doctorate, to teach students under the leadership of a professor of practice, which is otherwise a requirement for teaching in professional colleges. However, professionals appointed by professors of practice must have at least 15 years of service or experience in their particular profession, preferably in senior positions. It is not open to working or retired teaching professions.
“For courses such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science, it is difficult to find faculty. Therefore, it has been decided to bring in professors of practice to enable institutions to hire industry experts as faculty. The university is negotiating with industry to identify who can teach at the university experts,” JNTU-Hyderabad registrar Prof M Manzoor Hussain told Telangana Today.
The Universities Grants Committee (UGC) has recently approved Professors of Practice and is urging institutions to make the necessary changes to their regulations to enable Professors of Practice to participate in their respective institutions. The Faculty may appoint Professors of Practice to not more than 10% of approved positions for fixed terms at a particular institution not exceeding three years.
“Universities may hire experts from databases available to the University or they may do so themselves. Appointed experts understand that they are valid during fact-finding committee inspections to grant the University’s affiliation,” a senior official said. In addition to teaching, in addition to introducing new courses and teaching, the Faculty can also involve practical professors in the development and design of courses and courses.
