Chamalaganagar: Karnataka police have filed an FIR charge against a man for cleaning a water tank after a Dalit woman drank water, the Karnataka police said on Monday.
The incident took place in Chamarajanagar district and was subsequently registered by Mahadevappa, a resident of Heggothara village. The police action was taken following a complaint from Giriyappa, a Dalit from the same village.
On November 19, Dalit women came to the village for a wedding. She drank water from the village water tank.
While she was drinking water, the defendant tried to stop her saying it was Brahmin’s lane. Later, he and other villagers decontaminated the water tank with cow urine.
The Dalits in the village complained to Tehsildar Basavaraju about this. Authorities rushed to the scene, allowed all Dalits to drink from the same tank, and warned villagers against untouchability and discrimination.
The authorities also held peace meetings with leaders of all communities. Regional Director V. Somanna has sought a report on the incident on the issue.
