rennes: Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly took his side to the last 16 of the World Cup with a 2-1 win over Ecuador on Tuesday.
Koulibaly scored three minutes after Moises Caicedo leveled the score at 1-1.
In a must-win for the African champions, Senegal took the lead after a first-half penalty from Ismaila Sarr. Caicedo scored in the 67th minute.
At 1-1, Ecuador will advance from Group A and Senegal will be eliminated.
The Netherlands topped their group with a 2-0 win over Qatar in their other match. Senegal was runner-up, while Ecuador and Qatar were eliminated.
The last time Senegal advanced from the group stage was at the 2002 World Cup, where they reached the quarter-finals on their World Cup debut.
