Hyderabad: After weaving a saree that could fit in a matchbox, Rajanna-Sircilla weaver Nalla Vijay came up with a scented silver saree.
He had earlier woven a scented silk saree.
Silver sarees are woven from eight pieces of silver and cost around Rs 45,000. 27 special fragrance liquids are also used, and despite frequent washing, the fragrance will last for over two years. The silver saree was officially unveiled by Handloom Minister KT Rama Rao who congratulated Vijay for earlier weaving the “Siri Chandana” silk saree after it was displayed in front of them on Saturday.
It takes about 1.5 months to weave a silver saree, which weighs about 600 grams. More silver can be added depending on the customer’s choice, says Nalla Vijay. The management of Kanyaka Parameshwari temple Vanasthalipuram has placed an order for a silver saree, he said.
As for the Siri Chandana Pattu saree, about 60 sarees have been sold so far, Vijay said, adding that his next step is to weave a saree that changes color like a chameleon.
The minister expressed his appreciation to Vijay, saying that the state will provide him with all support.
