doha: Kylian Mbappe scored twice and lifted defending champions France to the knockout stages of the World Cup in a 2-1 win over Denmark on Saturday.
Mbappe gave France the lead in the 61st minute and then scored the winner with his right thigh in the 86th minute as the Blues became the first side to advance to the next round.
Denmark defender Andreas Christensen equalized for his side with a header in the 68th minute.
Four years ago, when France won the World Cup, Mbappe scored four goals, including one in the final. He now has 31 goals for France, one ahead of Jas Fontaine, who was the all-time top scorer in a single World Cup in 1958 with 13 goals.
France beat Australia 4-1 in their opening game, while Denmark drew 0-0 with Tunisia. Australia beat Tunisia 1-0 earlier on Saturday.
