doha: Robert Lewandowski’s second-half penalty attempt was saved by Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, sending Poland to a 0-0 draw at the World Cup on Tuesday.
It was Lewandowski’s first penalty miss for the national team. Poland’s all-time top scorer is still without a goal at the World Cup with 76 goals.
The Poland striker was awarded a penalty after a VAR review after Hector Moreno grabbed his jersey and pulled him down. Ochoa, in his fifth World Cup, yelled in celebration after he stopped, leaving the crowd chanting “Memo!”
Although Mexico controlled possession, Poland goalkeeper Wojcie Hrszczesny blocked all three of El Tri’s shots.
The scoreless draw was good news for Argentina, who were beaten 2-1 by Saudi Arabia in their Group C clash earlier. The Argentines, led by Lionel Messi, are widely regarded as favorites to advance.
