doha: Cody Gakpo and substitute Davy Klaasen were late for Monday’s World Cup as the Netherlands beat Senegal 2-0.
In the 84th minute, the Netherlands’ first shot of the Group A game at the Al Thumama Stadium, Gakpo glanced over Frenkie de Jong’s cross. Klaassen slotted in a second on the right after Edouard Mendy had only narrowly blocked Memphis Depay’s shot at the end of eight minutes of stoppage time.
Senegalese drums and chants were the dominant sound in the stands for most of the game, until the final strike saw Dutch fans in orange tops subdued. But Senegal’s main problem was predictable: it couldn’t convert any chances without injured striker Sadio Mane.
It was also thanks to Dutch goalkeeper Andres Noppert, who made three powerful saves to stop the Senegalese in his first game for the national team.
