Hyderabad: A plan to revive and restore the popular Sardar Mahal in the old city has been approved by the state government.
The 122-year-old heritage palace near Charminar will be developed along the lines of Rajasthan’s Neemrana Fort Palace and will feature a cultural center with galleries, studios, cafes and heritage accommodation. A tripartite agreement between the Telangana government, Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority (QQSUDA) and Kalakriti Art Gallery will handle the works.
Once developed into a cultural center, Sardar Mahal will showcase the history of the region through maps, paintings and pictures, and other artwork. Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) officials said the new exterior will be the same as the previous building, with plans to bring it back to life by restoring its original grandeur.
On Sunday, MA&UD Special Principal Secretary Arvind Kumar announced on Twitter that the Telangana government has completed the revitalization and rehabilitation plan for Sardar Mahal. After a detailed site survey and financial feasibility study, the restoration plan has been finalized. Market assessment and project concept development are also carried out as part of the exercise.
Over the years, Sardar Mahal has also been used by officials of civic agencies who have set up the GHMC South District Office in the building.
Sardar Mahal, built by Nizam VI Mirma Bubba Ali Khan in 1900, was also declared a heritage building by the Heritage Conservation Committee and the National Arts and Cultural Heritage Trust of India.
Neglected by the previous government, the 122-year-old palace once topped the must-see list for tourists in Hyderabad and parts of the building have become structurally fragile.
The current government has taken timely precautions to preserve it and the exercise is now to restore the building to its former glory.
Meanwhile, an action plan is also being prepared for the restoration of Khursheed Jah Devdi, located about 2 km near Sardar Mahal.
