Tirupati: President Droupadi Murmu prayed Monday at the ancient shrine of Lord Venkateswara in nearby Tirumala.
Earlier, the president, dressed in ivory-white traditional attire, prostrated at Lord Lakshmi Varahaswamy’s shrine on the bank of the tank near the Sri Venkateswara temple, a temple official told reporters Public Trade Interchange.
Upon arrival at the main temple, the priests traditionally welcomed Murmu, the 15th President of India, chanting Vedic hymns.
Top officials of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), along with priests, led the president to the inner sanctum of the 2,000-year-old holy site. She stood there for 10 minutes, praying to Lord Venkateswara.
Later, the president was awarded a silk cloth and temple prasad with an image of Lord Venkateswara by TTD chairman YV Subba Reddy and additional executive officer A Venkata Dharma Reddy, temple officials said.
This is Murmu’s first visit to temples and Andhra Pradesh after becoming president.
She arrived at Renigunta Airport on Sunday evening. In addition to praying at the Lord Balaji Temple, she will also participate in Sri Padmavathi Mahila Varsity’s interactive program here.
