Hyderabad: Congress lost the Munugode bypoll in the most tragic way, as did the leadership of TPCC Chairman A Revanth Reddy.
It was a humiliating defeat for the party, considering that out of the 12 previous parliamentary elections in the constituency, Congress had won 6 of them, 5 of them by Palvai Sravanthi’s father, the incumbent candidate. Govardhan Reddy.
For Revanth Reddy, however, it has been setback after setback after he took over the already troubled state legislature. From the GHMC elections in December 2020 to the Huzurabad elections in November 2021, the Congress party has underperformed in all elections under Revanth Reddy, who claims to change the fortunes of the Telangana boss party.
Revanth Reddy’s strategy of sending NSUI leader B Venkat to Huzurabad bypoll and indirectly supporting BJP candidate Etala Rajender has cost Congress dearly as Venkat lost his deposit in the election. The losing streak shows no sign of stopping, and GHMC’s election is in limbo after the party could only win two out of 150 divisions.
This was followed by disastrous performances in the MLC elections in the local authority constituency and the Hyderabad-Langredi-Mahabnagar graduate constituency.
Much was at stake for the TPCC Chief in the Munugode bypoll, given that the constituency was for long a Congress stronghold, but his indirect barbs that ‘to win elections, only superior police officials are required and home guards do not matter’ left the already The party is in tatters.
In another blow, Bungier MP Komatireddy Venkat Reddy did not campaign for the party in Munugod at all, despite being considered a star activist for the party. As if that wasn’t enough, an audio clip of him calling Congress leaders to work on the victory of his brother and BJP candidate Komatireddy Venkat Reddy came out.
With women making up half of registered voters, Revanth Reddy’s pledge to allocate 15 tickets to female candidates in the next election and an appeasement strategy to offer Sravanthi a ministerial post when Congress came to power did not turn the tide in favor of Congress either.
