Hyderabad: The first phase of the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Program (CRMP) is being successfully implemented as agencies seek to complete the rehabilitation of major roads in Hyderabad including repair, maintenance and re-carpeting at a cost of Rs 105 crore over three years. Under the CRMP, the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has entrusted the road repair, carpeting and maintenance of 709 km of major roads to the private sector for a period of five years.
After handing over the responsibility for repairing the road to the agency, an additional 102.95 km of road was identified and these roads were also handed over to the CRMP agency at no additional cost to the project. Overall, 811.95 km of urban arterial roads were repaired, maintained and re-carpeted as part of the first phase of CRMP at a cost of Rs. 10.5 billion.
The total estimated contract value for the CRMP works is approximately Rs. 18.27 billion for a five-year contract starting in 2020. The remainder of the funds will be used to maintain these major roads over the next two years. Responsibility for maintaining the road after restoration rests with the agencies, according to the contract.
In addition to repairing and maintaining major driveways, these agencies are also responsible for maintaining greenery in the median. According to the GHMC, bills for the agencies are being issued as the work progresses, and penalties are also being imposed on the agencies when grievance remediation is delayed.
“We want the main road to be pothole-free and there should be no eroded asphalt layers. Penalties will be imposed after complaints about potholes and road damage are not resolved within the stipulated time,” a GHMC official said.
Vacuum Dehydrated Cement Concrete (VDCC) Roads
GHMC lays Vacuum Dehydrated Cement Concrete (VDCC) roads on sections of roads with relatively less traffic compared to main roads/arterial roads and main flooded roads. GHMC is laying 146 km of VDCC roads at a cost of Rs 15,867 crore. Also to avoid rain stagnation and ensure longevity, GHMC is laying VDCC roads instead of normal asphalt roads.
