New Delhi: According to board sources, there is no imminent threat to Rohit Sharma’s ODI and Test captaincy as the BCCI brass did not find any dissatisfaction with his leadership in the conventional format.
Captain Rohit was present at the review meeting in Mumbai along with head coach Rahul Dravid. The meeting was chaired by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.
Along with Chetan Sharma, chairman of the previous selection committee, VVS Laxman, head of NCA, and Roger Binny, president, also attended the review meeting.
With the focus on the World Test Championship (WTC), with India likely to reach the finals, and the 2023 ODI World Cup, new T20 captain Hardik Pandya did not take part in the meeting.
Hardik is in Mumbai for the T20 international series against Sri Lanka which begins on Tuesday.
“Rohit leads India in both Tests and ODIs and there is no discussion about his future as a leader in both formats. Looking at his captain’s record in Tests and ODIs, it is very impressive,” said a BCCI The sources told PTI on condition of anonymity.
It was also decided that 20 players would be rotated ahead of the 2023 World Cup.
“The BCCI has shortlisted 20 players who will take part in the 50 rounds of the ICC World Cup,” Shah said after the meeting.
Sharma’s participation in Sunday’s review meeting could be a major move for the board, where he could once again chair the senior national selection panel.
If it is not the chairman, he is likely to be the representative of the North District. Former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad’s name is also on tour in the South End, but his inclusion in the panel is uncertain.
Sharma’s inclusion in the roadmap for the 2023 ODI World Cup is a major development in itself.
“First of all, if Chetan hadn’t been informed, he wouldn’t have applied in the first place. That in itself is a sign. India will host the World Cup in 10 months. The presence of Chetan and Harvinder will add continuity along with three new members,” the source said. people added.
It is understood that former opener SS Das is the big favorite in the East because he has 21 Test experience unless some other OCD leads BCCI to select the lightweight candidate from the East.
Gujarat veterans Mukund Parmar, Salil Ankola, Sameer Dighe from the west are in a three-man match.
A new committee will be appointed next week.
