Tokyo: SS Rajamouli’s blockbuster “RRR” starring Ram Charan and Jr. NTR is soaring at the Japanese box office, according to Variety.
After an impressive global release, the film opened in Japan on October 21 and grossed $145 million, including $14.5 million in North America.
Keizo Kabata’s Twin released “RRR” on 209 screens and 31 Imax screens in 44 cities and prefectures in Japan, the widest of Indian films in the East Asian country where Rajinikanth is the most popular Indian star. Rajamouli, NTR Jr and Ram Charan visit Japan for a film promotion tour.
Within a week, “RRR” grossed 73 million yen ($495,000), making it the highest-grossing opening week of a Japanese-Indian movie, Twin reported. “RRR” came in at No. 10, and the top nine were all Japanese films.
“RRR” was the highest-grossing foreign film of the week, ahead of “Bad Guys,” “Spencer,” and “Jurassic World Reign.” Twin estimates that “RRR” will recoup the issuance costs and become profitable within 10 days of issuance.
Muthu, starring Rajinikanth, remains the highest-grossing Indian film of all time in Japan with 400 million yen.
‘Muthu’ was released on limited screens in art theaters in 1998 and ran for a year. Despite the fact that fares were published 24 years ago, there has been no significant inflation in fares. The average ticket price for “Muthu” is 1,800 yen; the “RRR” ticket price is 1,900 yen.
There is a lack of historical data at the box office for Japanese films due to their release in art theaters, but Japan’s distributors and industry insiders put together a chart.
According to Variety, the second highest-grossing Indian box office in Japanese history is Raja Muri’s “Baahubali 2: The End,” starring Prabhash, with 300 million yen, followed by Ahmedabad. Mir Khan’s “Three Idiots” earned 170 million yen, Sridevi’s “English Vinglish” earned 130 million yen, Akshay Kumar’s “PadMan” earned 90 million yen, and Aamir Khan’s “Dangal” earned 80 million yen, Rajamouli’s “Baahubali: The beginning” received 75 million yen.
“Director Rajamouli is one of the most anticipated directors and has a solid fan base in Japan, as Baahubali 2 was released a year in 2017 and grossed 300 million yen at the box office,” Twin’s Kabata told Variety “.
“Furthermore, the Japanese theater market is returning to normal, and audiences are expecting an exciting movie experience like RRR,” Kabata added, noting that “Japanese audiences find Indian movies, especially RRR, to be completely different from movies. . They usually watch. Indian movies have a huge energy. They make them feel refreshed.”
