Mumbai: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chairman Sharad Pawar announced on Friday that he will not resign as party chairman, ending four days of turmoil that has plagued the group since May 2.
Speaking to a packed media conference, Pawar, 83, said his decision had sparked strong public sentiment and that party members, officials and his colleagues were dismayed to hear the news.
“I am overwhelmed by the love, trust and faith poured into me. Considering the calls of all of you and respecting the decision of the committee formed by the party, I withdraw my decision to retire,” Pawar said to thunderous applause.
The NCP top leader made the announcement hours after the committee rejected his resignation and called on him to continue in the same post, which was conveyed to him on Friday afternoon.
