Hyderabad: It is no exaggeration to say that 2022 is a milestone year for the healthcare industry run by the government of Telangana. The year started under the dark cloud of the third wave of Covid, driven by the highly transmissible Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, but ended on an upbeat note, with Telangana’s public health sector firmly establishing itself as a performer in the country best position.
The Omicron variant dominates and captivates government healthcare facilities between December 2021 and March 2022. In April, the Telangana government began rolling out sweeping measures in the public healthcare sector, which could set the sector back in the next decade.
The focus is on strengthening public health at all three levels, primary, secondary and tertiary, and creating a whole new level, the super-specialized service. As part of these efforts, the first big spend of the Telangana state government in 2022 is the decision to approve a staggering Rs 2,679 crore to set up four super-specialty hospitals in the four corners of Hyderabad – Telangana Institute of Nanomedical Sciences (TIMS).
While approving and distributing funds for building new healthcare infrastructure and hospitals in Hyderabad and other districts, the state government has also decided to strengthen the human resources of the public healthcare sector. Overall, from April 2022, the state government is focused on phased notifications for permanent recruitment of 13,000 positions at all levels of the state health sector.
Focus on medical education
The state government’s sole focus is not just healthcare delivery in public hospitals, as it has undertaken another major and prestigious initiative to enhance medical education by recruiting staff and expanding MBBS medical seats for students.
In the past 12 months, the Telangana state government has spent a staggering Rs 6,669 crore on developing specialized medical facilities in district hospitals, establishing 16 medical colleges and a super-specialized Warangal Health City.
During this year’s Dasara festival, eight new government medical colleges in Sangareddy, Mahababad, Mancherial, Jagtial, Wanaparthy, Kothagudem, Nagarkurnool and Ramagundam were inaugurated for the first time in the country in just one day. The state government has spent Rs 40.8 crore to develop medical colleges and needless to say, 1200 medical seats have been added this academic year.
