Hyderabad: With seven seats vacant in the state Legislative Council by the end of May, Telangana will witness a fresh round of elections ahead of state assembly elections scheduled for later this year. While three MLC seats under the MLA quota and one teacher constituency MLC seat will be vacant until March 29, the terms of two seats under the governor’s quota and one local agency constituency MLC seat will expire at the end of May.
The MLCs whose terms expire include K Naveen Kumar, Gangadhar Goud and Elimineti Krishna Reddy under the MLA quota, and the term of MLC K Janardhan Reddy from the teachers’ constituency on March 29. The terms of Governor’s Quota MLC Farooq Hussain and D Rajeshwar Rao and AIMIM MLC under Local Institutions Constituency Syed Aminul Hasan Jafri will end at the end of May.
The ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi is expected to maintain its dominance, retaining five MLC seats, given its strong influence in the state legislative assembly over the MLC quota and governor’s quota seats. It may back PRTU (Private Recognized Teachers Union) candidates for the Hyderabad-Rangareddy-Mahabubnagar teachers’ constituency election and AIMIM for the Hyderabad Local Institutions constituency election, sources said. While the PRTU has declared Chennakeshava Reddy as its candidate, AIMIM is most likely to retain Syed Aminul Hasan Jafri as the Hyderabad local body constituency.
The BRS leadership is keen to give chances to new candidates for at least two seats under the MLA quota and governor’s quota, sources said. Chief Minister’s OSD Deshapathi Srinivas, former council president V Swamy Goud and former MLA Boodida Bikshmaiah Goud are said to be the frontrunners among the aspirants. BRS leader Dasoju Sravan and former MLC professor K Nageshwar are also said to be considering MLC seats. It is understood that at least one party general secretary is also likely to find a place on the final list.
