Hyderabad: To make quality primary health care more accessible to the poor in urban centres, the Telangana state government is expanding the Basthi Dawakhanas programme. There will be a total of 500 Basthi Dawakhanas in all major and minor urban centers of the state by the end of June.
The scheme aims to ensure that 350 Basthi Dawakhanas cover all areas under GHMC and adjacent areas of Medchal-Malkajgiri and Rangareddy districts and the remaining 150 urban healthcare facilities cover the remaining major cities.
During the review meeting on Thursday, Health Minister T Harish Rao said, “Currently, there are 363 Basthi Dawakhanas in Telangana while another 57 are ready to take office. The remaining 80 Basthi Dawakhanas will be finalized at the end of June. Phase complete.”
Arrangements will be made for Basthi Dawakhanas to remain open also on Sunday if there is need and demand. “We should be ready to continue operating on Sundays and the senior doctor at Basthi Dawakhana should be available between 9am and 4pm every day,” the minister said.
A total of 3,206 Palle Dawakhanas will be fully operational in all areas of Telangana by the end of May, except the City Health Centre, and efforts are underway to recruit 321 vacancies for these Palle Dawakhanas. Harish Rao said clear signage in Telugu will be put up highlighting the hours (9am to 4pm) and the list of healthcare services provided by Palle Dawakhanas.
Directed senior health officials to ensure that all major flagship healthcare infrastructure projects are completed within this year, including the construction of Warangal Health City, four Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) super-specialty hospitals and NIMS in Hyderabad.
“The roads and building department must ensure that the deadlines are met so that new hospitals like TIMS, the expansion of NIMS and Warangal Health City are completed within this year, preferably by Dasara,” he said.
