Hyderabad: Telangana will soon develop its own biodiversity action plan, according to the secretary of the National Biodiversity Authority justin mohan.
in with S Sandeep Kumarhe also said that there are many sites in the state that could be declared Biodiversity Heritage Sites.
ask: What is the Telangana Biodiversity Program
A: Each state is required to have its own biodiversity conservation action plan, called a State Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (SBSAP). This is in line with national biodiversity strategies and action plans. Nine states have prepared SBSAPs and Telangana will have an SBSAP within a year. Next month, the 15th COP is scheduled to take place in Canada, where the post-2020 global biodiversity framework will be finalized. Telangana has the advantage of completing its SBSAP under the Global Biodiversity Framework, which aims to cover the next 10 years.
Q: About Telangana’s Biodiversity Initiative
A: Telangana has 14,341 Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) across all local bodies, which is quite impressive. They are responsible for biodiversity conservation in their respective local institutions. They also document all biological resources of local institutions in the form of people’s biodiversity registers, which help to leverage traditional knowledge for effective conservation.
ask: Funding for Telangana Biodiversity Commission
A: Telangana is a state that has performed well. The best thing about Telangana is that whatever funds are released to the board, it is immediately utilized. This fund is allocated to BMC for effective conservation measures. All Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) funds expiring will be released shortly.
ask: About Biodiversity Heritage Sites
A: Biodiversity Heritage Sites are rich in biodiversity and are not covered by forest jurisdictions. This can be due to bird populations, medicinal plants, and other reasons. BMC has to manage the sites and there are 33 sites in 13 states with Ameenpur Lake declared as Telangana’s Biodiversity Heritage Site. There is ample scope in Telangana to declare many sites as Biodiversity Heritage Sites. From an ecosystem perspective, there are many benefits to the local community beyond the tourism potential and could create more jobs in the area.
ask: Are biodiversity heritage sites a hindrance to growth?
A: It’s a myth, and there’s no legal hurdle. This is effectively a legal recognition of the area as a biodiversity heritage that needs to be protected to provide the ecosystem.
