Hyderabad: Paddy purchases related to the Vanakalam season are set to break all records as 3.806 million metric tons have been procured so far through 6,734 buying centers in the state.
This is much higher than the 2.584 million metric tons of paddy purchased in November last year, Civil Supply Minister Gangula Kamalakar said here on Saturday.
As of Friday, 3.806 million metric tons had been procured from the state’s 642,000 farmers through 6,734 buying centers. Of that, 3.687 million metric tons were diverted to rice mills, he said in a meeting with officials.
The total value of paddy procured so far is Rs 78.37 billion and Rs 47.8 billion has been disbursed to farmers. As part of the procurement, 952,000 sacks were used and another 916,000 were readily available to ensure farmers were not inconvenienced. In addition, procurement in many regions was also completed on schedule, with 729 procurement centers closed.
All procurement centers are equipped with all the basic facilities such as paddy cleaning machines, water machines, tarpaulins, etc. to speed up the procurement process.
“The quality of paddy has improved further this year due to Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s pro-agricultural policies and ample water supply,” Kamalakar said.
“Telangana has again evolved into the rice bowl of India. Minimum support prices offered to farmers are higher than those offered by private buyers,” the minister said, adding that this bodes well for the farming community.
He added that since the harvest was completed in December, every step is being taken to complete the purchase as soon as possible and arrangements are being made accordingly.
