Hyderabad: Over the past few years, there has been a lot of discussion about the skills that are important for individuals to function independently in society. Suparna Bajaj and Urmila Hemmadi present Flipside, a course that focuses on such skills.
From personal care to basic math to community life and chore skills, the duo seeks to instill a whole range of skill-building in children with learning difficulties. “Our program ‘Dys and That’ helps children with learning difficulties use learning strategies that help them become active learners,” Suparna said.
Partnering with Swacch, an organization that provides vocational and experiential learning skills, Flipside is a workspace that helps kids focus on the nine most important skills. “Flipside focuses on teaching fundamental movements into instrumental activities of everyday life,” she says.
Both partners in their respective fields recognized the paucity of skill building programs for children with learning needs after school and decided to collaborate and bring about the change society needed.
“This one-year life skills training course is for children aged 14 and above in grades 9 and 10, young people on leave, out of school who need life skills and vocational skills training,” Urmila said.
Participating children will also learn practical life skills such as keeping the home safe, basic reading, civil rights education, the law, accessing emergency care, and financial independence and career worth. “Our effort is to empower children with learning difficulties to effectively and safely face society and deal with themselves,” Suparna said.
The nine most important skills:
* Personal care
* basic math
* Family skills
* Required reading
* Leisure and entertainment
* community life
* Safety
* Self-awareness and self-confidence
* professional skills
