We know how winter affects our hair. The drop in temperature makes the scalp dry and itchy causing dandruff and also makes our hair frizzy. Our hair starts to lose moisture, causing damage. Here are some winter hair care tips to keep your hair from having a bad day:
1. Regular pruning
Getting your hair trimmed at least once every eight weeks is one way to keep your hair looking healthy and reduce your chances of split ends.
2. Avoid Heat Styling Tools
Let your hair air dry, as blow drying will wick moisture from your hair and increase the chance of breakage. Your hair is already brittle in the winter, and heating it can take its toll.
3. Avoid hot showers
While a hot shower is nice in winter, it also strips your hair of all its natural oils and moisture, drying it out, in addition to drying out your scalp and causing flakiness.
4. Regular oiling
Massaging your hair and scalp with oil regularly nourishes the roots and strengthens the follicles by moisturizing the scalp. Coconut and olive oils do wonders for keeping your hair moisturized, and massaging your scalp also improves circulation.
5. Avoid frequent shampooing
Over-washing your hair will strip all the moisture, especially in cold weather. Try to extend the time between shampoos, and do not wash your hair more than twice a week. Use a mild sulfate-free shampoo to maintain the natural moisture balance.
6. Use conditioner correctly
It’s important to use a thick, creamy conditioner that contains natural oils like coconut oil, olive oil, shea butter, and jojoba oil to keep your hair hydrated and nourished. When using conditioner, be sure to apply conditioner to the ends of medium-length hair and leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing with regular water.
7. Apply a hair mask once a week
A weekly hair mask is a great way to ensure the health of your hair. Hair masks that contain nourishing and moisturizing ingredients like honey can condition your hair. They reverse the effects of dryness while ensuring your hair is protected.
8. Cover your hair
Hair should be covered in winter to prevent moisture from being lost to the dry air, where it can be more easily damaged. Make sure to line your hat with silk or satin to prevent breakage. You can also use a drying oil to fight static.
