Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh has at least 17 state-of-the-art driver training institutes in the state.
These will be ready next June. In addition to teaching driving skills, these institutions will create safer roads for commuters.
While the Driver Training Institute (DTI) will open at different points depending on its completion, Rae Bareli’s Institute for Driving and Traffic Research (IDTR) is likely to be inaugurated by the end of the year.
The Institute is approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to train commercial drivers and those driving their own private vehicles at a nominal fee.
Apart from this, Driver Training Institutes (DTIs) have been sanctioned by the government in 14 other sectors which have gone through tenders to select suppliers.
According to a government spokesperson, “By March, we will be picking suppliers in all sectors. Varanasi is also planning to set up a center, but it is now being developed. Apart from that, it will take some time for Banda DTI to emerge. By June, we may have DTI in 14 divisions.
Suppliers will have at least three months to have DTI ready.
Drivers of official vehicles and commercial vehicles are required by the state to attend advanced driving courses.
“It is not to say that drivers cannot be trained after the DL is issued. Upon renewal, they will be required to provide a training certificate,” the spokesperson said, adding that this would also enable the DTI to be self-sustaining.
To secure similar institutions in the other 58 districts, the state government has opened up to the private sector.
The State Transport Authority (STA) is also calling for applications from the private sector.
