Phnom Penh: Vice President Jagdeep Dankar attended the 17th East Asia Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Sunday. Dhankhar and his wife Sudesh Dhankhar arrived in Cambodia on November 11 for a three-day visit.
Jagdeep Dhankhar also met US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the 17th East Asia Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It is worth noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin did not attend the East Asia Summit. Despite an invitation from host Indonesia, he is unsure whether to attend the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for next week.
It is worth noting that the East Asia Summit is composed of ASEAN members – Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam and its eight dialogue partners – India, China, Made up of Japan, Republic of Korea, Australia, New Zealand, United States and Russia.
The East Asia Summit (EAS) is the most important forum for strategic dialogue in the Indo-Pacific region. It is the only leader-led forum where all key Indo-Pacific partners come together to discuss the political, security and economic challenges facing the region and play an important role in driving closer regional cooperation.
According to a statement released by the Australian government, the East Asia Summit agenda ends with the annual leaders’ summit, which is usually held in the fourth quarter of each year in conjunction with the ASEAN leaders’ meeting. In addition to discussions, leaders issued statements on hot-button issues to demonstrate political will to develop policy responses and to lay the groundwork for cooperation.
In addition to the leaders’ summit, the East Asia Summit holds annual meetings of foreign ministers and economic ministers. The summit also serves as a platform to discuss political, regional security and economic issues. The summit also prepares for the leaders’ summit, including developing a statement for leaders to consider new areas of cooperation and mutual understanding.
Meetings between EAS environment, energy and education ministers are also held from time to time. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 16th East Asia Summit was held on October 27, 2021. Earlier on November 12, Danhar attended the 19th ASEAN-India Summit in Phnom Penh.
Notably, the ASEAN-India Summit commemorates the 30th anniversary of the ASEAN-India dialogue relationship. Vice President Denhal held talks with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen in Phnom Penh. The two leaders held “extensive” discussions on bilateral relations between the two countries, including human resources, demining and development projects.
Dhankhar and Hun Sen witnessed the exchange of four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between India and Cambodia in the fields of culture, wildlife and health in Phnom Penh. Vice President Jagdeep Dankar attends the Indian Community Reception in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on November 11.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice President Dhankhar said, “Cambodians see India as the land revered by Buddha, just as we see Cambodia as our civilized sister and family.” Dhankhar and his wife, Sudesh Dhankhar, at Chakto Phnom Penh The Mukh Chamber saw an exhibition of paintings by the ASEAN-India artist group.
