Hyderabad: The center was asked to abolish the 5% GST on handloom products and their raw materials, and hundreds of thousands of postcards handwritten by Telangana handloom weavers were sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi ( Narendra Modi). The postcards were sent in response to a call by KT Rama Rao, Minister of Handlooms and Textiles, after launching the campaign on 22 October.
Handloom weavers and handloom supporters gathered at the Nizam College Grounds on Monday and held a mass rally before mass posting of postcards at the General Post Office in Abids. They held placards with pictures of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, Minister Rama Rao and various slogans calling for the removal of GST on handloom products and their raw materials.
MLC L Ramana said many handlooms could not sell their products at affordable prices due to the imposition of GST, considering the high input costs and the additional taxation would only make things worse. He asked the centre to abolish GST and reinstate various defunct weaver benefit schemes including the ICICI Lombard Health Scheme, Mahatma Gandhi Bunkar Bima Yojana and others.
He said Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had taken several measures to protect the handloom industry. Some of them are Nethanna Ku Bima, Cenetha Mithra, Nethannaku Cheyutha and loan forgiveness for weavers.
The program and rally were attended by Chinta Prabhakar, Chairman of Telangana State Handloom Development Corporation, Guduri Praveen, Chairman of Telangana Powerloom and Textiles Development Corporation, former Rajya Sabha MP Rapolu Ananda Bhaskar, Warangal Mayor Gundu Sudharani and others.
