New Delhi: A 25-year-old woman has been arrested in southeast Delhi on suspicion of kidnapping a baby to sacrifice him to bring her dead father back to life, police said on Saturday.
They said the child was safely recovered from the accused and identified as Shweta, a resident of Kotla Mubarakpur.
She had previously been involved in two robberies and burglaries, police said.
They said they received information about 4pm on Thursday that a two-month-old boy had been abducted by an unknown woman in the Garhi district.
A team consisting of Deputy Inspector Rajinder Singh, Constables Ravinder Giri, Sher Singh, Sachin Saroha, Neeraj Kumar and Dinesh Kumar and Constable Poonam came to solve the case. The team is led by Pradeep Rawat, SHO Amar Colony Police Station.
According to the police, the baby’s mother informed the kidnappers that she had met her at Safdarjung Hospital and introduced herself as a member of an NGO working for Jachcha-Bachcha care.
Shweta pledged to provide free medicine and counseling to the mother and child. She later followed them under the pretense of examining the newborn baby, police said.
The accused also visited the family’s home in Mamraj Mohalla, Garhi on Wednesday to examine the baby.
On Thursday, she came to their home again to persuade the child’s mother to give the baby to the outing. A senior police officer said the mother had her 21-year-old niece with Shweta.
The accused woman came to Neem Chowk in Garhi and took the baby and the victim’s niece Ritu to her car. On the way, the kidnappers gave Litu a cold drink, which made Litu unconscious. Later, the kidnappers dumped Ritu in Ghaziabad, the officer said.
After regaining some consciousness, Litu told her family the child had been kidnapped, police said.
During the investigation, police examined CCTV footage of the area and identified the vehicle’s registration number, they said.
Around 4pm on Thursday, word was received that the kidnappers were approaching Arya Samaj Mandir, Kotla Mubarakpur. Police conducted a raid, arrested the accused and recovered the baby safely, the official said.
Shweta revealed that her father passed away in October. During the final ceremony, the official said, she came to know that dedicating a baby of the same sex to a human “would revive her father and bring him back to life.”
To carry out the superstition, she began searching the area for a baby boy. Police said she went to the maternity ward of Safdarjung Hospital and introduced herself as working for an NGO serving newborns and mothers.
Later, she met the victim’s mother. To earn her trust, they said, she often visited babies and family members.
